CamWorld Turns Eight

Eight years ago today, on June 11, 1997 I posted my first weblog entry. Had I known back then that I was embarking on a journey that would shape my life, my career and who I am as a person I think I would have run away screaming and hidden under a rock for a while.

Instead, I chose to a path unknown to most. Even way back in 1997 I knew there was something very powerful about what I and a few others were doing. The web in those days was mostly an information tool and I contributed what I could. What began as a web site designed to support a college class I was teaching at the time quickly became a resource for other web designers, checking in every day or so to see what new links I had put up. And thus CamWorld was born.

Blogs have since come a long way and I am proud to have been one of the first. Starting with my 1999 essay that helped define the concept and format, I have watched as blogs were at first laughed at and scorned by media professionals, then slowly accepted — and today are almost a mandatory part of any news and media property.

I don’t know what my future holds, but I can be sure of one thing: blogs and blogging will continue to be a part of it for an undetermined amount of time. Here’s to another eight years.
