Some famous quotes …

Some famous quotes that make me think of people I know:

  • “Don’t be so humble – you are not that great.”
  • “His ignorance is encyclopedic.”
  • “Do, or do not. There is no ‘try’.”
  • “Egotist: a person more interested in himself than in me.”
  • “The nice thing about egotists is that they don’t talk about other people.”

Wow, do I get some weird spam.

Salon: “The Xbox is, in effect, the Internet Explorer of game consoles.

Curl is a tool for transferring files with URL syntax, supporting FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, GOPHER, TELNET, DICT, FILE and LDAP. Curl supports HTTPS certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading, kerberos, HTTP form based upload, proxies, cookies, user+password authentication, file transfer resume, http proxy tunneling and a busload of other useful tricks.” Check out the comparison chart. What a Winer: It’s funny how Dave Winer bitches and moans every time someone mentions XML-RPC or SOAP and doesn’t mention Userland (his company). It’s OK, he’s just asking for a fair credit. But, check this out. Dave has copied an image from this site and published it on his own, without any credit whatsoever. That’s just wrong. [Archived screenshot.] The only thing I can think of that would pardon Dave for this offense is if someone emailed him the image. But if that were the case, then why does Dave know the billboard is in the UK? Update: Dave says that he did this because there was an ad on the original page. Now he’s denying advertising revenue (via site traffic) to the people who deserve it for paying for the hosting costs of free sites. It’s one thing to post an image on your own site if you don’t know the original source, but to deliberately copy an image and not credit the source, is simply wrong.

Dave writes [edited for brevity]:

I think you got the facts wrong. The site with the ad wasn’t from the people who took the pic. It was just a site with an ad with a cute pic on it. Like I said, I got the same pic via email from quite a few people. If you figure out who took the pic I’ll give them a prominent link on Scripting News, which is good for some hits.

Dave still doesn’t get it. He blatantly borrowed an image from a site and posted it to his own, just so he could save his readers from seeing a legitimate pop-up ad from the site the image was originally posted on. If Dave would just admit he borrowed the pic and credit the site we all know he got it from, there would be no reason for this conversation. But I guess Dave is above common courtesy and link etiquette.
